Below are a few of the most common metals we use in the manufacture of our products.
Lightweight, and corrosion resistant, 6061 aluminum is a versatile mid-range alloy that can be applied to many projects in construction, transportation, engineering, and electronics. It is commonly found in structural applications where toughness and corrosion resistance are of high importance. 6061 has great workability and weldability and is able to withstand tremendous amounts of vibration (also known as fatigue strength) making it perfectly suited for transportation applications.
Because of the extreme stresses and weight of full sized (1/2 ton and up) trucks, Calvert Racing uses the harder 7075 Aluminum to manufacture Leafspring bushings for heavy duty applications to maintain shape and structural integrity.
Chromoly is a type of lightweight, low alloy steel that gets its name from a combination of the words “chromium” and “molybdenum” – two of the major alloying elements. Chromoly steel is often used when more strength is required than that of mild carbon steel, though it often comes at an increase in cost. 4130 Chromoly designates that it has approximately 0.30% carbon by weight. The added chromium and molybdenum increase the strength. The added chromium helps to increase the steels hardenability and corrosion resistance. The added molybdenum helps to increase the toughness of the steel without adding weight, making it an ideal material for automotive, aircraft, even bicycle parts.

Mild steel’s carbon and alloying elements are relatively low, which differentiates it from higher carbon and alloy steels.
Mild steel is typically more ductile, machinable, and weldable than high carbon and other alloyed steels. Mild steel also has a high amount iron and ferrite, making it magnetic. It is advisable to coat the final product, as it is susceptible to rust under certain conditions. (note: Calvert Racing’s Mild Steel parts are coated to resist rust and corrosion)
