Many Calvert Racing parts are shipped with illustrated Install Guides. Please read these guides before starting your project.
A press will be required to press in the aluminum bushings. DO NOT USE A HAMMER or any other tool that might cause damage to the bushing.
A pair of 1-1/8″ wrenches is required to adjust the pivot assemblies. Calvert Racing offers a set of CalTracs wrenches with a shorter, rubberized and angled handle/grip designed to make this job easier.
CalTracs do not require welding for most applications.
Standard trucks have the axle BELOW the leafsprings. FLIPPED TRUCKS will have the axle ABOVE the springs. See Graphic below for photos. If you have any questions, please call us at 661-728-9600 Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm PST before you order.
Low Profile pivot plates offer 1.5″ more clearance while street driving or strip racing. See below for graphic.
Standard racing two hole (and three and four hole plates for some lifted and Monster applications) allow for adjustments to be made depending on your application’s requirements for desired results during the stresses of hooking while racing.
MX Pivot Plates have FOUR holes for more precise adjustability. At only 1/2″ longer than standard Drag Profile plates, they are within safety standard of race tracks (bottom of plates above the rim of standard 15″ rims).
For your baseline adjustment, use the hole that keeps your transfer links most parallel to the ground when the application’s weight is full on the tires. Experiment and make any adjustments as success varies from one application to another.
This information, with illustrations, can be found in the CalTracs Installation Guides that come with every set of Calvert Racing CalTracs sold.
We suggest a pinion angle to be between -2 to -4 degrees when used with CalTracs.* Add the angle of the pinion yoke to the angle of the output shaft with the vehicle sitting at rest with weight on the tires.
*NOTE: This is the angle of the pinion in relation to the output shaft of the transmission, NOT the driveshaft.
The HEX end of the bar is for the RH rod ends (silver colored nut) and goes toward the FRONT of the vehicle within the pivot assembly. The SMOOTH end of the bars are for the LH rod ends (gold colored nut inscribed LH) and goes toward the back of the vehicle on the rear mount. Do not attempt to force the threads or you could strip or seize the rod end and/or force transfer bar.
This information can be found in the CalTracs Installation Guides that come with every set of Calvert Racing CalTracs sold.
Standard U-Bolt (1/2″ diameter round) torque should be in the 65-70 foot pound range for standard CalTracs.
Truck U-Bolt (9/16″ diameter square) torque should be set at between 90-100 foot pounds.
NOTE: Re-torquing may be required after break in period. This is normal.
This information, with illustrations, can be found in the CalTracs Installation Guides that come with every set of Calvert Racing CalTracs sold.
Some MOPAR and S-10/S-15 products used two different sizes from the factory. We send both sizes to make sure you get one that fits. The extra set is NOT FOR THE REAR SPRING EYE.
This information, with illustrations, can be found in the CalTracs Installation Guides that come with every set of Calvert Racing CalTracs sold.
CalTracs were designed to use most existing factory u-bolts. To keep the cost to you as low as possible, we only include u-bolts in kits for applications that require them for correct installation.
If you would like to purchase new u-bolts, the are available in Parts & Accessories page.
ROUND U-BOLTS (spring UNDER axle): While you can use your vehicle’s stock ubolts with CalTracs, Calvert Racing’s 1/2″ diameter u-bolts is an upgrade as most stock applications come with 7/16″ diameter u-bolts. We recommend torqueing the u-bolts to 65-70 foot lbs. After running the vehicle down the track a few times, we also recommending checking the u-bolts and readjusting if necessary. Please see CalTracs Installation Guide for more info.
SQUARE U-BOLTS (spring OVER axle): Some of our Truck CalTracs kits come with square Ubolts when the length of stock u-bolts will not be sufficient. Otherwise, you can use your vehicle’s stock u-bolts with CalTracs. Calvert Racing’s square u-bolts are 9/16″ ” diameter. We recommend torqueing truck/square u-bolts to 90-100 foot lbs. After running the vehicle down the track a few times, we also recommending checking the u-bolts and readjusting if necessary. Please see CalTracs Installation Guide for more info.
NEW IN 2024: Standard CalTracs kits now come with Rod Ends equipped with GREASE ZERKS. Insert a small amount of grease to help combat rattle.
CalTracs Traction Bars were designed for high performance drag racing. Running your vehicle on the street may produce a small rattle. If this bothers you, before preload adjustments, install a piece of 3/4 inch heater hose fit to the length of the roll pin. This will cushion it against the bar to help reduce rattle.
CalTracs for Trucks have a rubber bushing installed to reduce this effect without interfering with the effectivity of our Traction Bars. If you run your truck without weight in the back, you may still notice a slight rattle on acceleration. This is normal.
CAUTION: Do not over-tighten the bolts or rod ends; these need to move freely for CalTracs to work without binding.
Replacement parts for CalTracs, including pivot plates, rod ends, force transfer links, rear mounts, u-bolts, and Big Link kits are available separately on the CalTracs Replacement Parts Page.
All of Calvert Racing’s 2.5″ wide Split Mono Leafsprings are assembled to order with Calvert designed and manufactured grade 8 hardware and heavy-duty alignment clamps. Aluminum bushings are pressed into the front spring eyes and polyurethane bushings in the rear spring eyes, these springs have been proven to withstand over 2,500 HP at ¼ mile ETs in the 6s.
Parabolic rear half design (thicker on the middle end, gradually thinning to standard thickness on the eye end) distributes the main spring pressure point through the length of the half, reducing spring breakage over time. Overlapping the spring halves (split mono) contributes to the strength necessary to withstand hard accelerations and stops on the track.
Calvert Racing makes Quick On Stabilizing Clamps to help keep your multi-spring clamp from separating on rebound. See graphic below for recommended Quick On Spring Clamp placement to control rebound and keep leafs from separating during launch. SCQ-01, SCQ-02 and SCQ-03 sets include six clamps, enough to place three on each spring pack as shown.
Begin by setting the adjustment dials counter clockwise until they are in the “1” position. Then turn the dial clockwise until you hit the base target adjustment: 2-5 for Street Driving, 1-5 for Trans Brake/Racing, 6-9 for Foot Brake/Racing. Try each setting until your vehicle reacts to hard acceleration as you expect. If your vehicle gets initial hook and then spins, increase the number to help reduce and control rear body separation.
If the vehicle’s body twists off the line, we recommend tightening the driver’s rear shock two clicks more than the passenger to help level out the body on launch.
